What is drive-in racking?
Compact pallet storage where the forklift drives into the racking
Drive-in racking is a type of pallet racking where the forklift drives directly into the racking structure to place or retrieve pallets. Pallets are stored several positions deep along the same driving direction.
Because aisles between individual rows are largely eliminated, a much higher storage density can be achieved than with conventional pallet racking. The system is particularly suitable for large quantities of the same or similar items.

Benefits
Benefits of drive-in racking
- High storage density within a limited floor area
- Fewer driving aisles than with conventional pallet racking
- An attractive cost profile per storage location
- Available new or used
The main advantage is compact storage. Each block requires only limited driving space, allowing more pallet positions to be created within the same warehouse area.
For large volumes of homogeneous products, the investment per storage location can be favourable compared to more automated systems. However, the stock rotation principle must match how the racking works.

Our approach
Our approach to
drive-in racking projects
- 01Site visit and analysisWe map out the warehouse layout, floor load, clear height, forklift type and storage needs.
- 02Custom configurationThe layout is tailored to factors such as dimensions, driving depth, number of levels and possible combinations with other racking types.
- 03Delivery and installationOur own installation team carries out the installation from Raamsdonksveer, planning the work around your operations.
- 04Inspection and serviceAfter handover, the complete installation is inspected, and Cor Verkolf remains available for questions, service and expansions.

Combinations
Often combined with drive-in racking
Drive-in racking is regularly combined with other storage principles so that every product group gets a suitable location.
- Shuttle rackingFor companies that want to combine high storage density with a higher level of automation, shuttle racking can be an alternative or addition.
- Pallet rackingFor items with more variation or a higher individual turnover rate, conventional pallet storage can be used alongside drive-in racking.
- Complete warehouse fit-outBy combining different systems, every product group can get a suitable place within the overall warehouse layout.
Frequently asked questions
Everything about this solution
What is drive-in racking and when is it the best choice?
Drive-in racking is a racking system where the forklift drives into the racking to store pallets several positions deep. The system is particularly suited to large quantities of a single item, limited floor space, and situations where LIFO is acceptable.
What is the difference between drive-in racking and drive-through racking?
With drive-in racking, work is done from one side and the forklift drives back out the same route. With drive-through racking, both sides are accessible, which makes a FIFO approach possible.
What is the difference between drive-in racking and shuttle racking?
With drive-in racking, the forklift itself drives into the racking. With shuttle racking, a shuttle takes over pallet transport within the channel, allowing the forklift to remain at the start of the channel.
Which products are suitable for storage in drive-in racking?
Examples include identical packaged goods, seasonal items, bulk goods, beverages and building materials on stable Euro or block pallets. Products with strict FIFO requirements or a lot of SKU variation are less suitable.
What does drive-in racking cost?
The price is determined by factors such as the number of lanes and levels, driving depth, load capacity per rail, material choice, forklift type and the choice between new or used.
